Photography Posture Tips from Thomas Street Studios
Here at Thomas Street Studios we see every posture mistake in the book, although thankfully not on a daily basis. We do our best to guide the subject into the posture that will make them look best, but for some people it is very difficult to get the model look. The most important thing to remember is the direction of your body in relation to the camera. If you have an artistic eye, as many models do, you will notice from popular fashion that very seldom is a model photographed directly front on. This is because the silhouette is not accentuated in the right way to show off the garments being modelled.

Next, you need to think about the angles of every part of your body in relation to the camera. This includes your shoulders and arms. Is your hand too low? Is the angle of your upper arm too low? Getting positioning right can be very difficult, especially for beginners. A great photo is not just about looking good, its about having a great composition. The composition of a photo includes everything from the light, to the setting, to your positioning, and how the shadows fall on the side of you that isn't facing the light. If you study professional photos in big brand advertising, perhaps for perfumes, there is always some form of contrast that gives the feeling of motion, even in a still photograph.
Thomas Street Studios have a variety of professional equipment and lighting techniques to be able to produce this momentum, and our photographers will guide you in this respect but you need to know the fundamentals so that you can picture where they guiding you when it matters and time is short. The team at Thomas Street Studios have years of experience in directing people in front of the camera to get the best possible results for their modelling portfolio, or just photos of a special day.
